Dental Health


Dental health is something that everyone should know about. The importance of it should not be underestimated, as the health of your teeth is a direct reflection on your overall health. Oral hygiene is the process of maintaining one’s mouth germ free from infection and other nasty problems by regularly brushing the teeth and even cleaning below the gum line to prevent bad breath and other dental diseases. In addition to this, regular visits to the dentist are also highly recommended as it is advisable to check up on your oral health at least once in a year.

A toothbrush is an essential part of taking care of one’s teeth and dental hygiene. There are different toothbrushes suited for different kinds of teeth; a toothbrush designed for a hard surface or grinding one’s teeth may not be suitable for softer teeth like those of children or adults. One needs to brush teeth after meals or at least twice in a day, preferably after every meal to remove food particles that might be trapped between the teeth or between the gum line and one experiences dry mouth.

Aside from brushing, it is highly recommended to visit a dentist once in a while to check if there is some kind of dental problem or disease present. This is very important in terms of taking good care of one’s oral health, as cavities may develop even if treated with an oral irrigation procedure or an oral cleaning procedure. Cavities can also be developed due to smoking, diabetes or drinking coffee or tea. These are some of the most common causes of cavities and they need immediate dental attention. There are various dental procedures that can help in removing the cavity such as scaling, root canal treatment or extraction.

Flossing and dental flossing are two important tools for ensuring the onset of early dental health, as they ensure that food particles from between the teeth are removed and prevent them from being caught in the crevices of the dentures. Dentures have been a major cause of early decay in adults and teenagers. A person who does not floss is more prone to acquiring cavities than someone with a meticulous dental routine, as the former is more likely to forget to floss and the latter fails to remove food particles stuck between the tooth and the dentures. As much as possible, a month before a person starts his/her first job, he/she must make it a habit of flossing daily and should start brushing his/her teeth after every meal.

Regular dental checkups are necessary in order to monitor any changes in one’s oral health and to detect any kind of oral problems that need immediate dental care. A dentist’s visits usually include X-rays as well as dental examinations which involve the inspection of the gums, teeth, oral cavity, jaw and tongue. For persons who suffer from oral cancer, the first step that is taken is oral cancer screening. A regular examination of the oral cavity, teeth, gums and lips is also done. A person who visits a dentist twice or thrice in a year, is considered to be having regular dental care.

For persons who are suffering from various types of oral diseases, the treatment can vary depending on the gravity of the condition. A basic course of dental treatment may involve minor adjustments and can be treated as simple as brushing the teeth, having dental checkups and obtaining topical or systemic treatments. Major oral diseases require surgical procedures and may involve dental implants, dental surgery, cosmetic dentistry, etc. Oral health programs are a must for persons who wish to maintain a healthy and attractive smile.
